How to Rent a Bus to Drive Yourself – With Resources

If you’re like me, you’ve searched for information on how to rent a bus you can drive yourself, and only been able to find a bunch of rental companies that claim you can rent a bus from them, but then offer you a smaller vehicle.  Or you only come up with charter companies that want you to use their driver.

How to rent a bus to drive yourself?  You can rent a bus for yourself from private individuals.  Some of the buses you find will be converted into custom layouts and others will be traditional seating.  Visiting some of the online RV rental sites listed below will help you find what you are looking for.

This resource will help you find a bus that you can rent and drive yourself.  The reason you can’t find a bus to rent and drive is because there aren’t any companies that offer this type of rental.  At least no companies that I could find.  I am going to show you how you can locate them.

There are two main places I have been able to find buses to self drive.  They are and rvshare.

If you’ve ever visited Outdoorsy, or if you go there now, you will probable think you can’t find a bus for rent on the site.  And I will admit, it is difficult to find a bus on their site when you go directly to the site.  Outdoorsy has very limited search capabilities.  You basically can only enter the city you want to search in and the dates you are looking to book your rental.  But there is another way you can search.

To find a bus on Outdoorsy, you have to do a search on Google that limits itself to results on Outdoorsy.  The search you execute on google looks like the following:

site: bus

This search yielded some good results.  Here are a few.

2016 Tiffin Motorhomes Allegro Bus

Make: Tiffin Motorhomes
Model: Allegro Bus
Type: Class A
Sleeps: 4
Length: 45 Feet

This bus comes loaded with features.  It has air conditioning, toilet, kitchen, generator, beds, and so much more.  And the best part is you get to drive it yourself.  This size bus does require a special license to drive.  It is also pretty pricey at $300 per day.

If you slightly change the first Google search, you can find some smaller buses/vans.  Here is the search:

site: sprinter

And here is a result from that search.

10 Seater Custom Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Make: Mercedes Benz
Model: Presidential Sprinter
Type: Class B
Sleeps: 10
Length: 24 Feet

This is an amazing looking bus. It has custom captains chairs that swivel. There are two bench seats in the back that accommodate two people each. The benches can each fold down to create a bed for all for people that are seated on them. There is a toilet in the very back of the van. There is also a small refrigerator, sink, and microwave oven. I would like to take this on everyone of my trips. How about you?

Another website you can find some good buses to rent and drive yourself is  Rvshare has very good search funtionality.  You can search by location, date, number it sleeps, price, type of drivable RV, type of Towable RV, type of booking, your own keywords, and additonal filters.

The screen shot above was done with ‘bus’ entered in to the keyword field.  All of the results are for you to drive the bus yourself.

Here is one of the listing.

As you can see, you can rent this beauty for ony $295 a night.  And you get to drive it.  This definitely beats renting a hotel room.

The bus also comes with a plethora of amenities.  You get an stove, sofa, microwave, refrigerator, kitchen sink, toilet, shower…the list goes on and on.

Here is a result from searching with the keyword ‘sprinter’.

As you can see, both sites have owner’s listing their buses and vans for you to rent.  You may not be able to find exactly what you are looking for in your immediate area.  But if you are willing to travel a little bit, you should be able to get the right vehicle

What type of license do you need to drive a bus?

Licensing varies from state to state, so be sure to check with your state and any state you will be driving in.  To drive a vehicle that weighs less than 10,000 pounds, your regular license should be fine.  Anything over 10,000 pounds requires a special license.

As an example, in Louisiana, to operate a vehicle over 10,000 pounds and less than 26,000 pounds and for hire, you would need a Class D license .  To operate a vehicle less than 26,000 pounds not for hire, you would need a Class C license.  To operate a straight vehicle that is over 26,000 pounds, you would need a Class B license.  And to operate a vehicle with a trailer that is over 26,000 pounds you would need a Class A license.

For a bus, like the Tiffin Allegro Bus shown above, you would need a Class B license.  For a bus, like the Mercedes Benz Sprinter, you could use your regular license.

What kind of fuel does a bus use?

Buses come in both gasoline and diesel.  Diesel is more common because diesel engines tend to have more power, especially when towing.

The smaller vans, like the Mercedes Sprinter, come in both diesel and gas powered.  Mercedes only offers the Sprinter in a 4-cylinder for gas and in a 6-cylinder for diesel.

How much will gas or diesel cost for a bus?

The cost you pay will be however much the fuel is at the pump per gallon.  Large buses get between 4 – 10 miles per gallon.  A smaller vehicle, like the Sprinter will get between 16 – 24 miles per gallon.

According to, diesel fuel contains 10% to 15% more energy.  They say this means vehicles with diesel engines will go 20% to 35% further than gas powered vehicles.  Gas, at least at this time, is cheaper than diesel when priced per gallon.  If you are given a choice between a gas or a diesel engine in your rental, you should consider the price per gallon and what kind of load you will be carrying.

Are winds and other road conditions a concern?

The larger the vehicle the more the wind will affect how it drives.  You will need to slow down when the wind in high to keep from being blown around and possibly losing control.

Rain and snow can be extremely dangerous when operating a bus.  Be sure to get the right kind of training for these conditions.  It’s a good idea to go out and do some  real world simulated driving on a closed course.

A bus rental is waiting for you

Whether you’re taking a large group on a day trip or you want to head out on the road for a long hiatus, you can get a bus and drive it yourself.

Checklist for Changing Address: The Ultimate Guide

There are a lot of things you need to take care of when you move.  Somethings, like unpacking your extra boxes, can wait a little while.  Notifying others about you change of address is one of those things that just can’t wait.  We’ve put together this checklist for changing your address to help you make sure you notify all of the people and businesses you need to.

Post Office

The post office needs to know where you have moved to so they can get all of you mail to you.  You can go to the USPS website to notify them about your change of address.  As of this writing, there seems to be a small fee  of $1 when you submit the form online.  You can also call the post office and verify you new address over the phone.   You will have to pay a $1 for phone verification.  If you visit the post office in person, you shouldn’t have to pay the $1 verification fee.

The post office website says you can make a permanent address change or a temporary address change.  The temporary address change can last from 15 days to 1 year.

They also offer a premium forwarding service that allows you to have your mail collected by the USPS and shipped weekly via Priority Mail.

Notifying the IRS of your address change is extremely important.  Thankfully, there a few ways you can notify them.

When you file your taxes

You can notify the IRS of you address change when you file you tax return.  One of the questions they ask you is “has you address changed?”  If it has and you haven’t notified the IRS yet, you should fill out the section for change of address.  The downside to using this method is you have to wait until you are filing your taxes.

By Form

You can change you address with the IRS at any time by filling out Form 8822 for individuals and Form 8822-B for businesses.

In Writing

If forms really aren’t your thing, you can notify the IRS of you address change by writing in.  You will need to provide the following infomation:

  • Full name
  • Old and new addresses
  • Social security number, individual taxpayer identification number, or employer identification number
  • Signature

The IRS also encourages you to notify the post office, especially if you change of address happened after you filed your tax return and you are waiting on a return check.

Social Security Administration

The Social Security Administration provides a way for you to notify them of your address change on their website.  The process looks fairly simple.  First, create an account if you don’t have one already.  Next, login and clikck on My Profile.  Then select the Update Contact Information button and add you info.  Then, schedule when you want the information to update.  Finally, review and submit.

Electric Company

There are a few things you have to consider when notifying your electric company that you are changing your address.  First, you have to decide when you are moving out so you can notify your current electric company to shut your service off.  Before telling your current provider to shut the service off, you have to decide if you should leave the electricity on during and after your move.

If you have a lot of things to move and it will take you several days to move everything, you may want to keep the electricity.  Also, if you haven’t sold your home yet, you probably should leave the electricity on so the home can be cooled or heated while it is being shown to prospective buyers.

You also need to notify your new electric company with the date you want the electricity turned on in your new home.  You may need to put a deposit down and schedule new service ahead of time.

See wikipedia for a comprehensive list of power companies in the United States.

Gas Company

You can notify your gas company to shut the gas off as soon as you know the date your will move out.  The only thing to consider here is whether to keep it on for heating purposes if your home is still on the market.

Your new gas company may require a deposit and early notification to hook up the new service.

You can see a list of natural gas companies on wikipedia.

Phone Company

If you have a landline, you will need to contact your phone company with the date you are moving out.  If your home is still being shown to prospective buyers and you have an alarm that is being monitored, then you will need to leave the phone on until you sell your home.

Unless you are building a new home, you should probably have phone wires already connected to your new house.  Contact the phone company ahead of time so you can make sure you have service when you move in.

Cable Company

You probably won’t be watching much television while you are moving, so let the cable company know early about your address change.  This may net you a little spare change if you haven’t reach the end of the month.

When you move into your new house, you may or may not already have cable connected to the home.  Notify the cable company as soon as possible to limit any delays.

Internet Company

The internet seems to be vital to most of us these days.  If it is to you, then you will want to leave your service on until you move out of your old home.  You also need to make sure you contact your new provider before you move to be sure you have service as soon as you move in.

Water Company

Many water companies require a deposit when you start service.  Be sure to notify the water company the you will be moving to a new address.  If you are living in the same area, you may be able to transfer you account to the new address.  Just be sure to get your deposit back if you do shut off the service.

Home Insurance

If you presently have homeowner’s insurance, your premium will be prorated when you sell your home.  If there is a balance due to you, be sure to let the insurance company know about your new address so they can mail you a check.

Notifying your employer employer early can be an immient help to you.  Your employer can help you transfer to another location if they have one available.  Many companies also have people dedicated to helping their employees find work in a new area; even if it is with another company.

If you are staying in the same area and will not have to switch jobs, notify your employer with your new address so your check and other job related mail can reach you.

Your bank needs to be notified so there records reflect what is on your identification.  Your id has to match your bank account or you may not be able to do transactions in the bank.  Speak to your local banker to find out when is the right time to update your bank account with your new address.

Also, the bank needs your correct address so they can mail debit cards, checks, and other items to you.

Credit Card Company

Your credit card company will send your statements to the address on file.  Your address is also used to verify your identity when you are applying for a new credit card.  Contact your credit card company to find out what is the right way to notify them of your address change.

Usually you can notify your credit card company by mail, phone, or through their website.

Health Insurance

Most health insurance is through an individuals employer.  Don’t assume your address has been updated with your health insurance company just because you updated it with your employer.  Contact your health insurance company to verify they have received the change.

Your health insurance company needs your correct address so they can mail your statements and id cards.  Also, if your address is not correct on your account, you may have trouble when you go to the doctor’s office.

Dental Insurance

Dental insurance, like health insurance, is usually through your employer.  Be sure that your dental insurance company has the right information in your file.  Don’t expect it to be update by your employer.

Moving A Refrigerator

Moving a Refrigerator

The refrigerator is an great piece of equipment and is one of the most important items in your home. You use it for so many things, from cooling water and drinks, to freezing meat, making ice, and saving that left over chicken salad. I am sure you can think of a few other practical uses you’ve had for yours. Living without it would be quite a hassle.

The biggest challenge is moving it without damaging it, the floors, and yourself. Refrigerators are extremely heavy.  This can be a serious issue when you attempt to move one. But, with the alternative of buy a new one or paying someone else to move it, it’s much cheaper to move it yourself. Refrigerators appear to be very strong because of their size and look, but many parts are very fragile. If you don’t move it correctly, you run the risk of damaging, scuffing, or even causing it to not work at all. The good news is, if you follow the right procedures, you should be able to successfully move your refrigerator to its new location.

Here are a few safety tips before you move.

Remove all the contents from the refrigerator and make sure that it is not plugged into an outlet.  After you unplug it, wait a few hours to give it time to defrost.  You may want to put some towels on the floor while it is defrosting.  Sometimes water will leak out.

Take advantage of this time to clean out the refrigerator. If you leave food inside to long, it will become hot inside and start to spoil very quickly.  This will create a very unpleasant odor that you may not be able to get out later.

Secure the shelves by taping them together or removing them until the move is done. Take out any shelves that are made of glass, and make sure to properly wrap them individually for extra protection. After they are wrapped and you have loaded the refrigerator on to the truck, you may place them back inside the refrigerator during transit.  Just make sure they won’t move and are padded well.

Once you are ready to start the move, pull the refrigerator out.  Make sure you don’t damage anything as you slide it out.  You can rent a dolly from your local hardware store to move it safely.

To keep from damaging the refrigerator, walls, and doorways, wrap it in furniture blankets or any kind of blanket for that matter.  You also should secure it to the dolly with ratchet straps.

How to move a Refrigerator on its side:

A lot of people think that moving a refrigerator on its side can damage it.  We agree. When moving a refrigerator on its side,  some of the oil may escape from the compressor and run up the lines.  If this happens the appliance may be damaged.

This is the number one problem when moving a refrigerator on its side. We suggest that you don’t lay a refrigerator on its side to move it.  If it is the only option you have, you should call a professional.  Otherwise, you run the risk of permanently damaging it..

How to move a refrigerator in a pickup truck

Carefully slide the fridge onto a cart or dolly and use straps to wrap around it.  Make sure they are tight. Back your pickup truck as close as you can to the house.  The less distance you have to travel with it, the better.

At the back of the pickup truck, place yourself on one side and have your helper stand on the opposite side. Bend your knees while maintaining a very good grip.  Be sure to lift with your legs to avoid back injury.  You may want to also wear a back support brace.  Use smooth and slow movements to avoid hurting yourself in the process.

You can now slide the unit to the back of the cab.  Tied it down with rope or straps.  Remember that there will be wind blowing on the top part of the refrigerator as you are driving.  This will try and make it move backwards.  Don’t use bungee cords. If you do, the refrigerator will move all over the place the faster you go .

Don’t speed and avoid bumps in the road.  You should try to take streets that have lower traffic and go during times when there won’t be as many people on the road.

When you get to your new place, unstrap it and move it to the foot of the tail gate. Slowly take it down and remember to bend your knees to avoid hurting your back.

Moving a refrigerator to clean behind it

When moving a refrigerator to clean it, it can be very simple on one hand, and difficult on another. Newer fridge models now have wonderful helping resources in the form of wheels! This makes moving your fridge from point A to B a lot easier than the older models. If your fridge has wheels, you won’t have an issue moving it. The only recommendations are that you should remove items on the top, or just to be mindful of the items that are there. There are plenty of horror stories about a blender, rice cooker, and other objects falling and the glass breaking or someone getting hurt simply because someone totally forgot about it. Since your fridge has wheels, you won’t have to remove the contents from inside, however, be very mindful when you are moving it about. Remember the contents that you may have inside that can get spilled and damage other edible goods. After cleaning the area, safely slide the fridge back into its space.

If your refrigerator model has no wheels, to remove it from its current position to clean, you may need some help to lift it so that it does not damage your flooring or carpeting. Using a dolly or another item will help. Also, remove the contents from the top of the appliance because it will be elevated and this will eliminate any accidents to anything on top and your persons. You may also want to remove contents that have the ability to spill inside, such as water, cups of juice, and dishes of food. If the item cannot spill at all, then it is most likely safe to stay; just use your best judgment. After it has been lifted from the space, you can clean, and then carefully put it back. Now you are able to replace the contents back inside.

Moving a refrigerator on hardwood floors

In this move, it is best to be very careful. If you pull the fridge across the floor, it can easily damage your flooring. The most recommended solution to move a refrigerator on hard wood floor is to use a fourth-inch Luan plywood, which is a type of flexible wood. This can be purchase at local hardware stores, like Home Depots. To move the fridge on it, take a sheet of 4′x8′ luan and cut it into a two pieces, 36″x48″ or 30″x48″, depending on how wide your fridge is. You need them wide enough that they will fit through your archway and between the cabinets.

Please ensure that the floor is clean before you lay your luan down; you don’t want to trap any debris or dirt under there that could damage the hardwood.

Slide the fridge on the first piece of luan, then lay the second piece just in front of the appliance, then slide or roll it on that one. This will be like a puzzle, interchanging the tiles. You’re essentially making a pathway for your fridge to roll on. Cut a small piece of lumber, about 2 x 2 or 1×1, then put it on the wall in the spot for the refrigerator. This makes a turning point or pivot, so whenever you push the fridge into its final spot, you can easily remove the final piece of luan by pushing on the top of the appliance. It also makes it easy to insert a piece of plywood under the front feet so you can pull your appliance out and clean behind it whenever you would like.

Luckily, if the flooring isn’t going to be visible when your refrigerator is in place, you probably won’t need to protect it. So with the last piece of luan, simply push your sheet of luan directly to the cupboard kick plates and push the fridge back into its place.

Moving a refrigerator with a water line

When moving a refrigerator that has a water line, don’t fret too much. The water line does not make it difficult to handle. It’s actually very easy to pull off. First, turn the water off. It is always better to avoid accidents. Always be mindful of the things on top of the fridge because you may need to pull the fridge out a bit, depending on the availability of space in your reach. If the space is narrow, then try to bring the fridge forward, remember to take you time. Your aim is to now have some space so you can see and reach behind the appliance. Ensure that you can fit within the space as you will need to be behind the fridge to do the disconnection. If your fridge space is wide and you have the ability to rotate it 90 degrees, go ahead, so that you can have enough space to disconnect the parts. On the back of the refrigerator, your water line which comes with the fridge connects with another plastic tube which is about 25-30 feet. That plastic tube allows the water to enter your fridge. You can disconnect it at the intersection where the metal nuts are. Once disconnected, you can then move the fridge out more to clean or if you are going to move that fridge, you can wrap up the water line that is attached to it and proceed with caution using the steps above.

Moving a refrigerator a short distance

When moving a refrigerator a short distance, bear in mind how near or far away it is really going. Short distance can mean across the road, to a new room, or five minutes away. If you have a dolly and you want to move the fridge across the street or place it in the garage or someplace not too far, you can easily use the dolly to transport it. Load the fridge on it and strap it on for safety. As always, it is better to be safe than sorry and no one likes feeling sorry. You can walk moderately with the appliance or you can go really slowly, it should be obviously what works best for you. If you’re unsure, just take your time.

If you need to move the fridge a block away or up the street, a pickup truck would be needed to make it a lot easier on your behalf. If you have a few helpful friend, ask for the help to transport it or you can pay a small fee to have it moved the short distance. Try to keep it in the upright position; this is always preferable and strapping it and securing it is always important, no matter how near or far.

If it is a short distance inside the house maybe from the kitchen to the dining room, you can use the luan plywood to assist.

Moving a refrigerator up stairs

Moving a fridge upstairs requires the minimum of two persons rather than risking the possibility of damaging your appliance and hurting yourself. If you have a dolly, this would be a very helpful resource for this project. If you don’t, buy one or rent one for the day, as it best recommended for this task. Slide the dolly under your refrigerator and ensure that the fridge doors are at front, you should only see the back of the fridge if you are behind the dolly handle bars. Also, secure your appliance using the straps on the dolly to ensure safety. Tip the dolly further to the back so that fridge is balanced of the wheels. Once the dolly is at the first stair, back it up one step at a time. Once you have made it over the stairs, to the place where you want to place it, you can unstrap the fridge and have your helper assist when you are ready to take the fridge off. Have the person hold the fridge while you slide the dolly from beneath it, seeing that you have successfully made it up the stairs. Seeing that oil was unstable during the move, it is best to have it stand in the position for a few hours before plugging in.

These are just a few of the possible steps you can take to move a refrigerator from point A to point B. Remember to practice safety at all time and also remember, if you cannot handle it on your own, it is always best to ask for assistance.

How To Distinguish Good Moving Companies From Bad Ones

You go online and search ‘Moving Companies.’  You get back hundreds of results.  How do you determine which ones are good and which ones are not.  You could assume that if they are listed higher in the search results, then they must be good.  But this won’t work because the search results are not always a good indicator of what is good.

You also could try review sites.  There are free and paid sites you can look through to try and get a feel for what a company is really like.  The problem with this is, a lot of people don’t leave reviews.  Also, review sites can be gamed by unscrupulous companies to make it look like they have done an excellent job.

If you have friends and family that have recently made a move, you can ask them who they used.  But how many of us have close friends and family that have just moved.

More than likely, after you do an initial search, you are going to be left with a list of moving companies that you know absolutely nothing about.  So, how do you determine which ones are good and which ones are not.

  • Have a local office
  • Website
  • Timely response
  • Offer quotes
  • Accept multiple forms of payment
  • Offer references

Have a local office

Any good company is going to have a local office that you can visit.  If you contact a company and they say they are located out of state or don’t allow outside visitors, you should not do business with them.

Once you confirm they have a local office, you should visit it.  You will be able to learn a lot about the company when you go to their office.  By looking at the outside and inside of the building, you can see how they treat their own belongings.  If everything is shabby, you can expect they won’t think much of your stuff when they are handling it.  On the other hand, if everything is taken care of well, you can hope they will handle your things with the same care.

Every real company should have a website.  If a moving company doesn’t have a website, you should for another company.  This is not to be judgmental.  But, you have to ask yourself, “Why don’t they have a site?”  If they can’t afford one, then you definitely don’t want to do business with them.

The website can also be an indicator of the quality they offer.  If the site is broken or just not designed well, you can assume that they don’t pay attention to details.  When someone if moving you stuff, you need them to pay attention to details.

A word of warning, the testimonials on a website or that they company presents to you on paper are selected by the company.  This means they are only showing what they want you to see.

Timely response

If they don’t respond to you when it comes to the little things, like returning phone calls, they won’t respond when it comes to delivering your furniture.  You need a company that is punctual.  You need to get them to commit to a schedule and guarantee they will keep it.

Offer quotes

All good companies offer quotes.  You need to know how much it cost before you make a decision.  One of the best ways to do this is to get quotes from multiple companies.  If the company you are thinking about using is higher than the other, ask them why.  They may have valid reasons for being high.  If they reasons a not good, you will have to decide is it worth it to pay more for their services.

On the flip side, you don’t want to choose a company base solely on price.  This could get you in a world of trouble.

Whichever way you decide to go, you want to make sure you know all of the cost before signing a contract.  You need everything spelled out so that there is nothing left unknown to you or them.  You may want to have an attorney look over the moving contract before signing it.

Accept multiple forms of payment

If a company says they only accept cash, you don’t want to do business with them.  All real moving companies have bank accounts and can accept checks.  If they say they don’t accept checks because they can’t verify them, they are lying.  All checks can be validated.  If a company is worried about that, they can use a validation service that guarantees the check or they can wait for the check to clear before they will move.

If you turn your cash over to someone that you have not thoroughly verified, you may never see it again.

Offer references

One of the best ways to determine how good a company works is to ask for references.  You want to get references for three people that were satisfied and three people that were not satisfied.  If they company says they don’t give out references, then they have not done their due diligence to make sure they can provide you with good, independent reviews.

Choosing a moving company is a big deal.  You will spend a good bit of time and money with them.  More importantly, you are going to trust them with moving all of your belonging in and out of you new home.  Choosing the wrong company could end up costing you significantly.  Choosing the right company will make you life, during your move, a whole lot easier.

Take your time.  Do some good research. Ask as many questions as you need to.  Only after you are satisfied with all of the answers give, should you move forward with hiring a moving company.
